Incontinence (Bladder)
Updated March 11, 2023
Incontinence of bladder has several causes and patterns. Stress incontinence occurs when the bladder is stressed, such as with coughing or jumping. Urge incontinence occurs usually when the bladder spasms, due to irritability or deficiency of nutrients such as magnesium. Women usually experience more incontinence than men because of a shorter urethra and childbirth. Both men and women, as they age, experience muscle and tissue atrophy of the pelvic floor. Medical evaluation for conditions such as bladder infection, bladder polyps and other causes should be considered before embarking on any home treatments.
Fortunately, exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor, called Kegel exercises, help in the vast majority of cases. Devices previously only available at urologists offices are now available for home use that allow for more effective exercising of the pelvic muscles. One such device is the Perifit, which connects to a smart phone by bluetooth and allows for progressive strengthening.
Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the ecology of our body. If we count all the living cells in us and on us, our cells are only 10%, while 90% are composed of bacteria, yeasts, parasites, viruses and other critters called the “Biome”.Â
