A soap is a semi-solid material that is formed when a fatty acid such as in olive or coconut oil, is mixed with a strong base such as lye. The making of soap, like perfume, is a blend of art and science. The main characteristic of soap is its ability to mix oils and water-based solutions. Soaps can act as surfactants and emulsifiers, similar but different chemical functions.
