Skincare Terms

Types

Cream: oil/water emulsion, approx 50/50

Elixir: oil base and contents

Gel: water0based with a carbohydrate, starch or protein matrix-

Lotion: oil-in-water emulsion, oil/water <40%

Ointment: water-in-oil emulsion, water/oil < 40%

Serum–water-based, no oil

Functions

Astringent: drying or shrinking, adds friction

Emollient: lubricating, reduces friction
