Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Proteins are longer chains. Amino acids, peptides and proteins can be divided into three main categories: structural, enzymatic, and signaling. Some very important molecules such as thyroid is only made of two amino acids (tyrosine) attached to each other with either 4 or 3 iodine molecules. Glutathione, one of the most important detoxifiers of the body, the lack of which causes liver injury in many conditions, is a tri-peptide, only containing three amino acids.
Hormones are chemical signal molecules that developed as life evolved from single-cell organisms to multi-cell organisms. When two or more cells need to work together, they must have a form of communcation. The main ways cells communicate (within conventional thought) are chemical and electrical. Plants only have chemical communication, while animals have both chemical and electrical. Chemical messengers are called hormones, electrical messaging is called the nervous system. They are highly interactive and demonstrate both analog and digital features.

This table of human hormones show that many of our natural hormones are peptides, as small as only 9 amino acids! While some hormones target specific cells, others, such as thyroid and insulin (both derived from amino acids) affect virtually every cell of the body in multiple ways. For example thyroid hormone affects both the nucleus and mitochondria of the cell. Despite the fact that hormones are natural or “bioidentical” doesn’t mean that they are safe for manipulation. The main reason for this is that the hormones are highly integrated and coordinated, so changing one can have both immediate, long-term and trans-generational effects. For example mothers who took DES (di-ethyl-stylbesterol, a synthetic estrogen) saw no problems with their “DES Babies” until they hit puberty.
The hope for a “magic bullet”, “quick fix” and/or “biohack” is part of human nature, seeking the path of least resistance. However, it is well-established that most of our chronic illnesses are based on lifestyle factors, deficiencies and toxiicies that impair the natural processes that evolved over billions of years. Thinking that we can out-smart these processes yields risks for humanity on the same magnitude as Fukishima and AI. Pharmaceutical control of research, medical care, media, and legislation are both a cause and symptom of this trend.
The dominant counter-logic is that if an agent is able to produce a quick effect without addressing the root cause, how long will it last, and will it enable or impair root-cause, non-pharmacologic healing. For many medical conditions such as back pain, the experience is very strong that steroids and surgery will provide better short-term relief, at the high risk of worsening after a 5 year period. The illusion that a five-year cancer survival is a “remission” is shattered by the root cause(s) that are not sought nor addressed. Many pharmaceutical agents are known to have diminishing effects over time for similar reasons.
It is safest to assume that symptoms and chronic conditions are purposeful, implemented by a billion-year old information system to compensate and/or correct an underlying problem. Dis-eases that are called “random” simply means that we don’t understand them sufficiently.
Hallmarks of risky products, whether they be bioidentical hormones, stem cells, growth factors, and now peptides are:
- promise of quick fix;
- a powerful system-wide effect;
- claim of low risk for a new product;
- claim that because the agent is natural it is safe to administer;
- expensive sexy ad campaigns including self-published books and articles;
- corporate funding
